After a turbulent year of adjusting forecasts and changing expectations, 2021 will be a year of reemergence and growth for the AEC industry. While construction may be known for more traditional approaches that have stood the test of time, many practices have emerged that have allowed for improved communication, more complex digital fabrication, and striving innovation in the face of safety concerns and a competitive market. Tech+ Virtual Harnessing Technology for Future Practice will showcase the latest tools and research relevant to architects, engineers, and construction practices from leaders who are quantifying physical properties within the digital environment.

How is computer based design using data to shape the future of architectural design and construction? Jenny Sabin is an architect, educator, designer and artist who draws upon biology and mathematics to design material structures - her work at the forefront of a new direction for 21st-century architectural practice. This talk will present ongoing trans-disciplinary research and design spanning across the fields of cell biology, materials science, physics, fiber science, fashion, electrical and systems engineering, and architecture. Sabin’s collaborative research, teaching and design practice focus on the contextual, material and formal intersections between architecture, science and technology. Through the visualization and materialization of dynamic and complex datasets, Sabin has generated a body of speculative and applied design work that aligns crafts-based techniques with digital fabrication alongside questions related to the body and information mediation. The material world that this type of research interrogates reveals examples of nonlinear fabrication and self-assembly at the surface, and at a deeper structural level.

Advances in computation have empowered designers with robust analytical and simulation tools. These advances have inverted our understanding of the role of simulation. No longer is it something that is reserved for late in the process to validate design. Rather, it can now be a formative part of an iterative or algorithmic design process. What tools are designers using to push these boundaries and how are they being implemented for the built environment? Leaders in the field will discuss the potential for simulation as a tool for the future.

Across the industry, the disruption of 2020 have accelerated trends that have been years in the making. Among these is the integration of technology in predesign at earlier and earlier stages that ultimately lead to success on the job site. How can we make use of technology that helps move projects forward, open up new design opportunities, and improve team communication? New tools and working development from the industry's leading experts showcase how to prevent overdesigning with excess data as well as the keys to tapping the potential of 3D modeling across the many teams behind successful projects.

In a rapidly changing climate, the goal to have projects delivered on time and safely is increasingly dependent on reliable fabrication. Because customized fabrication is in higher demand, the tools used to tame this rising complexity must be balanced within the constraints of fabrication shop and construction. How is the industry responding to emerging fabrication techniques and autonomous manufacturing?

Architects of today face a common task that defies intuition – how to balance building performance and strict carbon targets against cost. Sustainability in design is certainly a worthy and necessary goal, but the amount of options can be overwhelming and the costs prohibitive, especially in the eyes of owners. How can designers best convince their clients to integrate sustainability into a project? Keeping costs low and backing up decisions with fact-based analysis are solid first steps.  Join this 60 minute session for a dive into workflows and case studies with implementable takeaways for your projects.

Course Objectives
  • Overview of typical challenges from project pursuit to construction the structure to provide appropriate adjustability in the field.
  • Learn how to use data driven design to balance sustainability and cost
  • Use project case studies to understand benefits of automated cost reducing workflows
  •  Learn how to integrate the new technologies in your current and future projects.
