9:30 – 10:00 AM
Stantec is leading the design team for The Lucas Museum of Narrative Art to reinvent how technology is used in the design process. A collaboration of 150 architects, engineers, and designers merge multiple models in a cloud-based BIM model live while embracing parametric modeling and software interoperability to deliver the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art. The paperless project is being brought to life by some of the world’s best, brightest, and most digitally savvy design professionals in the industry. Attendees will come away with knowledge of the latest technology in digital design.
Currently under construction in Los Angeles’s Exposition Park and set to open in 2025, the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art was envisioned by renowned architect Ma Yansong of MAD Architects with Stantec as the architect-of-record. An 11-acre campus with extensive new green space designed by Studio-MLA embraces the museum’s 300,000-square-foot building, which will feature 100,000 square feet of gallery space, two state-of-the-art theaters, and dedicated spaces for learning and engagement, dining, retail, and events.
10:00 – 10:20 AM
Ben Petuchowski from Canvas will demonstrate Canvas, which uses the LiDAR sensor on your iPhone Pro or iPad Pro to create editable as-builts in Revit, SketchUp, Chief Architect, and other popular design programs. Canvas makes 3D capture accessible to smaller firms and projects and eliminates the need to trace point clouds.
10:20 – 10:40 AM
Automating workflows has the potential to transform the building industry by increasing productivity and efficiency, improving quality of life, streamlining QA/QC, and reducing the potential for errors and accidents. This automation can arguably be seen as a foundational requirement for AI, driving industry wide change and provide the framework for greater creativity and more positive outcomes. In this session we’ll review some of the pertinent ways that IMAGINiT is working with our customers to automate their workflows and driving process improvements.
10:40 – 11:05 AM
11:05 – 11:45 AM
Alloy Kemp and Sila Gulgec from Thornton Thomasetti as well as Thomas Kerns of Perkins + Will will discuss the application of machine learning and other algorithmic and generative technologies to architecture, engineering, and construction applications.
The Perkins & Will i|o team, part skunk works, part platform, is situated in a loosely coupled relationship between our research group, digital practice, project teams and their clients. Composed of strategists, software engineers, data scientists, UX designers and technologists, the team advances new product and service opportunities to support the larger digital transformation efforts across both Perkins & Will, and the group of operating companies in the parent DarGroup. See how i|o has evolved into it’s current form through projects across a variety of technology stacks while working towards a common platform.
11:45 AM – 12:30 PM
Curtis Rodgers, partner at Brick + Mortar Ventures, Vivin Hegde, partner at Zacua Ventures, and Nikil Choudhary, general partner at Nirman Ventures, will share how entrepreneurship and investment in technological innovation can revolutionize the AEC industry and the built world. Attendees will come away from this roundtable discussion with an in-depth knowledge of the innovations in robotics, drone imagery, and digital design tools which are reshaping the construction and design industries.
12:30 – 12:35 PM
A talent marketplace for the Architecture, Engineering and Construction industry, Archslate connects a talent pool of 40 million people to work on the right projects for them through a one-click apply process using its AI-based hybrid system.
12:35 – 12:40 PM
Spaces is the champion for the concept development stage of the design process, and provides the first purpose-built tools to enable architects to explore more, consider more and design more.
12:40 – 1:40 PM
1:40 – 2:20 PM
In this roundtable, Laura Karnath, technical designer at Walter P Moore, and Kathleen Hetrick, sustainability engineer at Buro Happold will discuss the latest in technology for environmental optimization. Attendees will come away with a knowledge of the cutting edge tools they can bring to their own practice to develop high performance buildings through energy modelling and whole building lifecycle analysis
2:20 – 3:00 PM
Alvin Huang, associate professor at USC’s School of Architecture, will introduce attendees to USC MAARS, a 42-unit graduate design program that focuses on the integration of architectural design, building performance, and technology, within the context of digital design and fabrication. Digital and analog techniques for discovering form through variable material and geometric organizations and force simulations, while simultaneously considering the design opportunities being afforded by advances in computation and fabrication technologies. The proposed curriculum responds to emerging shifts in the architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) industry towards integrated technologies, increased efficiency, and productivity, and a digital workforce driven by digital, sensing, and intelligent technologies. An integrated design curriculum that incorporates these concepts will support students in developing the skill necessary to foster innovation in practice with a focus on: data, technology, integration, performance, ecology and sustainability.
3:00 – 3:30 PM
3:30 – 3:50 PM
Thesla Collier (Gensler) and Cesar Escalante (Autodesk) both leaders with AIA Technology in Architectural Practice will share their expertise in digital design with an emphasis on practical knowledge designers and engineers can bring to their own practice.
3:50-4:30
Join this roundtable of leading technologists and researchers from across LA academic and AEC landscape.
Biayna Bogosian
Assistant Professor of Architectural Technology
Julia Koerner
4:30 – 4:50 PM
Hassan Ragab will present on the emerging frontier of AI-generated design. This presentation will focus on AEC related topics but also has overlap with broader debates about artistic authenticity and ownership spurred by innovations in AI image-generation.
